How to paint a galvanized roof

A wide range of roofing materials did not affect the popularity of metal roofs. Nowadays, as well as a few decades ago, such structures attract home owners reliability, durability, long operational period and attractive appearance.

1

In most cases, the roofing coating is made of galvanized steel. Even a complex galvanized roof in the photo and in reality always attracts people with their originality. In addition to the above qualities, this material is characterized by:

  • simplicity of installation;
  • low cost;
  • the possibility of producing sheets of any thickness and forms;
  • versatility (you can make other elements of roofs - endands, fits, ends);
  • ecology.

The right choice of paint is a guarantee of high-quality performance

To increase the service life of the roof of galvanized iron, it is necessary to carry out the correct care. One of the mandatory conditions is painting roofing material. The choice of paint is based on the increased passivity of the metal surface. Therefore, the paint for galvanized roof should differ in effective elastic and adhesive properties.

Alkyd and oil paints and varnish products are not suitable. In the interaction of such paints with a galvanized surface, chemical reactions arise, leading to a decrease in the adhesive properties of paint. And this is the cause of its rapid detachment from the metal surface of the roof. As practice shows, such a paint is enough for only one season. A year later, I will have to re-engage in the painting galvanized roof.

The most optimal option will be the use of special paint. One of them is acrylic ground enamel. The metal coating on which this paintwork is applied will serve quite a long period of time.

Soil enamel is more expensive than ordinary paints. But at the expense of the larger operational period, this paintwork will fully pay off its value. In addition, compared to the oil paints, the soil enamel makes a galvanized roof more attractive.

The most common paints intended for galvanized roof are Hammerite and Tіkkurila. The first of the named paint can be applied directly on rust. The main "pluses" of the paints of Hammerite is:

  • creation of wear-resistant and durable coating;
  • excellent grip with metal;
  • excellent anti-corrosion properties;
  • excellent roofing appearance;
  • rapid drying;
  • variety of color solutions;
  • resistance to ultravioleti.

To disadvantages of staining of the metal surface, this paint include:

  • the appearance of salt sediments;
  • the occurrence after 3-4 years of rust;
  • with insufficient degreasing paint cracking;
  • in some cases, the formation of air bubbles when applying a roller.

The best solution will be the use of the Finnish epoxy paint Tіkkurila. In addition to the advantages with which the HAMMERITE paint has, it is characterized by:

  • good resistance to atmospheric phenomena and chemical environment;
  • excellent heat resistance (up to + 80ºС);
  • the possibility of storage and transportation at low temperatures.

Perhaps the only lack of paint Tіkkurila is that its application is recommended to produce in hot weather. The heated galvanized will lead to a better paint grip with a surface.

Deciding with how to paint the galvanized roof, you need to make sure there are normal roofing state. If it has a rust, the coating should be replaced or treated with kerosene and sandpaper.

Preparation of roofing to staining

Preliminary work by staining roof of galvanized steel are as follows:

  • in the presence of an old paint is peeled off;
  • mud swept out;
  • roof surface clean;
  • it occurs degreasing;
  • the roof is completely dry.

If there are cracks in the roofing materials or the holes necessary to make their embedding. This process can be carried out using:

  • soldering;
  • special sealants;
  • adhesive compositions.

3

Sealing defects by using metal or plastic patch. Work is performed in the following order:

  • sandpaper to clean the old paint and rust in places jointing sheets;
  • sheets maximally tightly fitted to each other;
  • a brush dipped in zinc chloride and treated her joints;
  • a powerful soldering iron is rubbed with ammonia;
  • produced soldering defects;
  • cooling the embedded cracks;
  • removes excess solder.

With a wide range of special adhesives and sealants opening in the roof can be stopped without the use of soldering. This will significantly reduce the time to repair the roof. Before painting the surface of the existing cracks are sealed with epoxy putty.

To extend the life of galvanized roof should not prevent mechanical damage during its installation. Hermetic sealing of the site of attachment of the sheet is performed by using screws having a silicone gasket.

The nuances of painting galvanized roofing

After the elimination of all defects and dry roofing roof exposed to staining. The application of paint can be made by centrifugal brush, roller or spray. Acrylic enamel primer is applied on galvanized sheets in 2-3 layers.

Despite the fact that the following processing of the roof is recommended after 8-10 years, it is necessary periodically to inspect the roof. When loss of resilience and cracking of the paint occurs ingress of moisture into the cracks. This leads to the appearance of rust. Such sites should roofing paint again.

Often, not only rust appears on the upper side of the galvanized steel sheet. Its lower part is also exposed to a damp environment. Moisture gets on the roof of the dwelling. Can solve this problem by creating a solid batten roofing material. The seams that are formed between the planks are sealed special chalk paste. It consists of fine sawdust and linseed oil. After drying putty is covered by a double layer of oil paint.

The greatest efficiency coloring of the galvanized roof reaches two types of primer solutions. First, the entire surface of the roof is processed by primer for galvanized coating. Its application is carried out by a darous roller, which has a long handle. In hard-to-reach places (panel seams and screws) a brush is used. The main thing is that all the roof is finished with a primer.

After complete drying, the surface must be applied a layer of primer with anti-corrosion properties. The use of various primers reduces the likelihood of paint peeling. After drying the second layer of primer, the roof is covered with 2-3 layers of acrylic wind enamel.
